To Quote A Legend:
To borrow a quote from the great Peter Griffen:
Ya know what really grinds my gears.....?
3 point hockey games. Why? Well call me old fashion, but why does a team get a point for losing a game. It's pretty ridiculous when you think about it. We have a completely seperate statistical column for teams when they lose in overtime or in a shootout. Crazy. Take a look at how close the standings are in the East and West. I know this is Gary and the leagues way of more "parody", but I just think it is silly. Two points for a win and zero points for a loss - any loss. Then you will see some exciting 3rd periods and overtime, the teams know the only way they are getting the points is if they win.
High-sticking penalties. I don't actually have a problem with the referees calling high-sticks, but the difference between 2-minute minors and 4-minute double minors is laughable. If by chance a player gets cut - no matter how accidental the high stick infraction is, it is 4 minutes. What? The high-sticking penalty should be 100% at the discretion of the officials. If they see intent or malice then a 4 minute penalty is definetly deserved. I've cut myself shaving a lot worse than some of these guys get cut and they are awarded 4 minutes of powerplay time. These kinds of things can dramtically change the outcome of a game.
Reputation penalties. It leaves a bad taste in my mouth when I see a Jarkko Ruutu or another player of his reputation get put in the box for nothing. He's no angel, none of them are, but sometimes the penalties they get are completely undeserved. For example, last night in the Ottawa/Vancouver game - Ruutu's wrist shot on Luongo leaves a rebound which Ruutu takes a swipe at. The referee did not see the loose puck and blows the whistle at the same time Ruutu goes for the puck. Shane O'Brien takes exception and drops his gloves and goes after Ruutu, who uses his head and does nothing to draw the penalty. After commercial break I see both men in the box for unsportsmanlike. Huh?
Take care hockey fans!
